Here’s a list of reader’s resources for finding new books to read, as well as information about series, award winners, and bestsellers. All of these resources are available for free online. The Chatham Community librarians are also happy to help show you how to use these resources at the library!

Resources For Finding New Booksa

NoveList
NoveList is a comprehensive readers’ resource.  Search for books, authors, and series; find book recommendations; and discover read-alikes for your favorite authors.  (Chatham County Public Libraries subscribes to this database.  You can also access this resource from the Online Resources page of our website.)

Read North Carolina Novels
Do you enjoy reading books set in the Tar Heel State? Read North Carolina Novels is a blog managed by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Library that features reviews of novels set in North Carolina. Even better, the reviews are organized by county, genre, and region, so make it your mission to read every novel they’ve reviewed set in Chatham County! A great resource for discovering local authors.

Mystery Lists
If you love mysteries, look no further than this amazing collection of mystery lists by topics ranging from presidential crime fiction to needlework/sewing mysteries. There is even a list for Librarian Mysteries!

Goodreads
Think social networking with books. Rate the books you’ve read for recommendations on books to read. You can also add your friends to your reading network and keep track of the books you’ve read and the books on your “to-read” shelf.

LibraryThing Suggester
Type in the title of a book you like, and the LibraryThing Suggester will make a list of books that other people who’ve read the same book like. The Unsuggester (same page) is fun too, it shows a list of books you’re least likely to like!

WhichBook
Do you like books that are funny but also unpredictable, or books that are unusual and long? WhichBook lets you pick adjectives like funny, sad, or serious to describe books you like, and will give recommendations based on this.

This database from the Kent District Library is a great resource for finding out all of the titles, in order, for any given series.a

The New York Times bestseller list is one of the most well-known bestseller lists for fiction and non-fiction books.

IndieBound Bestsellers
IndieBound Bestsellers lists are the weekly bestsellers for independent bookstores in the United States.

Awards Listsa

Pulitzer Prize
The Pulitzer Prize is an annual U.S. award in the fields of print and online journalism, fiction, and music.

National Book Award
The National Book Award is given annually to American authors in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and young people’s literature.

Michael L. Printz Award
The Michael L. Printz Award is given annually to the best book written for teens.

Man Booker Prize
The Man Booker Prize is an annual award for the best original full-length novel written by a citizen of the British Commonwealth of Nations or Ireland.

Edgar Allan Poe Award
“The Edgars” honor the best in mystery writing annually.
