Check the fine print in this advertisement for Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral (from the November 14, 1901 edition of The Chatham Record). It’s the friendliest I’ve ever read:

“Consult your doctor. If he says take it, then do as he says. If he tells you not to take it, then don’t take it. He knows. Leave it with him. We are willing.”
